This article provides an ‘Introduction to Writing Agile User Stories‘ and looks to discuss what a User Story is, the benefits of User Stories and how to write an Agile User Story.
Agile User Stories – The Who
Typically, user stories are created by the Product Owner. It is the Product Owner’s responsibility to obtain all the requirements from the stakeholders and then compile them into a full set of user stories. The Product Owner serves as a neutral party whose sole goal is to design a comprehensive product that will meet all the requirements of the stakeholders and will be deemed functionally possible before the requirements are planned for development.
However, anyone can write user stories. It’s the product owner’s responsibility to make sure a product backlog of agile user stories exists, but that doesn’t mean that the product owner is the only one who writes them. Over the course of a good agile project, you should expect to have user story examples written by each team member.
Once the user stories are passed along to the development team, the Scrum Masters goal is to ensure the team completes all requirements under budget and on time, and removes any impediments on the development team. Should any questions arise about the user stories, the Scrum Master will confer with the Product Owner and reach a suitable resolution.

User Stories Applied by Mike Cohn is one of our favourite books on Agile User Stories. The book starts with an overview into user stories, and details what a user story is and the different aspects of them. He then discusses how to go about writing a user story, and provides details of the INVEST criteria that can be used to determine if the story is meeting all of its objectives. Next Mike gives an in depth discussion of who user stories are written for and where to begin when gathering the details for them. The book then discusses acceptance testing user stories, including how to go about specifying these criteria and the responsibilities of the development team and customers during this process.
