Agile Epic Story Development
A 59 Seconds Agile Article
This article provides an ‘Introduction to the Developing Agile Epics and personas’ and looks to discuss what an Epic Is and what a Persona is within an Agile project.
Agile Epic Story Development: Developing Epics
In summary, by using the epic, and other agile artefacts, the teams are able to organise their work and break them down into do-able tasks. They help in prioritising customer requirements and aid in change requests by the customer with minimal disruption of the project plan.
On the other hand, personas are fictional characters that have a name and picture; relevant characteristics such as a role, activities, behaviours, and attitudes; and a goal, which is the problem that has to be addressed or the benefit that should be provided.
Agile Epic Story Development: Personas
Here is a good example where personas were used in design and development, which might give you some additional inspiration. Some years ago, BMW ran a campaign called “The Story of Joy”, which you might remember. Adverts showed various people driving BMWs.
The story behind the campaign is that each of the people shown in the advert was a persona and that these personas were used to design the range of vehicles and the features offered. Single retirees, young families, dog-lovers and others were envisaged as the market for the cars.
Mike Cohn was the first person to suggest deriving epics or user stories from personas. Mike writes:
“The disciplines of user-centered design and interaction design teach us the benefits of identifying user roles and personas prior to writing stories.”

User Stories Applied
A 59 Seconds Agile Book Review
User Stories Applied by Mike Cohn is one of our favourite books on Agile User Stories. The book starts with an overview into user stories, and details what a user story is and the different aspects of them. He then discusses how to go about writing a user story, and provides details of the INVEST criteria that can be used to determine if the story is meeting all of its objectives. Next Mike gives an in depth discussion of who user stories are written for and where to begin when gathering the details for them. The book then discusses acceptance testing user stories, including how to go about specifying these criteria and the responsibilities of the development team and customers during this process.
