This article provides an ‘Introduction to Agile’ and looks to discuss what Agile is. It provides a brief introduction into the history of Agile and why Agile is important.

Writing Better User Stories

User stories are part of an agile approach that helps shift the focus from writing about requirements to talking about them. Agile stories include a written sentence or two and, more importantly, a series of conversations about the desired functionality.

In Scrum, user stories are one of the main artifacts used by teams to capture the needs of the product users. They summarize details of the conversations held between the customers and the Scrum team. Written from the user’s perspective, they describe the user’s desired requirements in order for them to reach their end goals.

These are written in non-technical terms in order for everyone to easily understand what needs to be done and what value would be achieved.

User Stories Applied by Mike Cohn is one of our favourite books on Writing Agile Requirements. The book starts with an overview into Agile Requirements, and details what they are and the different aspects of them. He then discusses how to go about writing a user story, and provides details of the INVEST criteria that can be used to determine if they meet all of its objectives. Next Mike gives an in depth discussion of who they are written for and where to begin when gathering the details for them. The book then discusses acceptance testing, including how to go about specifying these criteria and the responsibilities of the development team and customers during this process.
