An Introduction to The Agile Declaration of Interdependence
A 59 Seconds Agile Article
This article provides an ‘Introduction to The Agile Declaration of Interdependence’ and looks to discuss the Key points within the Agile document.
The Declaration of Interdependence
The sixth and final statement of the Declaration is “We improve effectiveness and reliability through situationally specific strategies, processes, and practices.” This goes back to the second statement of being prepared for uncertainty.
All projects will be different, and all projects will come with their own changes, complications, and special sets of circumstances. Think about a time when you were involved in a project that was organized under waterfall. Even though the project was different from anything your company had taken on before, the same standard practices and systems were forced onto the project.
You cringe as you remember how inefficient the project was, and how it suffered because it was trying to follow a development system that didn’t work for it. This shows that even the best-laid plans and practices have to be changed sometimes for the good of the project.
There has to be room to be flexible. You may be thinking at this point that the Declaration of Interdependence is a magic document that will solve all of your problems. While it has many benefits, that isn’t quite true.
Adopting the Declaration will improve your return on investment if it is followed correctly. Remember, minimize inefficient processes to maximize return on investment. But by itself the declaration of interdependence, is not enough. There has to be some kind of framework to support it.
In other words, the Declaration of Interdependence is not a development style on its own; it’s a supplemental set of concepts that will support efficiency and the delivery of value.

User Stories Applied
A 59 Seconds Agile Book Review
User Stories Applied by Mike Cohn is one of our favourite books on Agile User Stories. The book starts with an overview into user stories, and details what a user story is and the different aspects of them. He then discusses how to go about writing a user story, and provides details of the INVEST criteria that can be used to determine if the story is meeting all of its objectives. Next Mike gives an in depth discussion of who user stories are written for and where to begin when gathering the details for them. The book then discusses acceptance testing user stories, including how to go about specifying these criteria and the responsibilities of the development team and customers during this process.
